I didn’t know anything about Radical Face when I first listened to this record, and to be honest, I still don’t know that much about him. Ben Cooper is the mastermind behind Radical Face, and from what I’ve read he recorded this album almost entirely by himself in a shed in Jacksonville, Florida.
Aptly named, Ghost is a beautiful, harrowing album that is centered on themes of haunted houses and memories of those who are gone. The album isn’t completely melancholy and slow though, there are many upbeat, happier songs. Ben uses a lot of handclapping beats accompanied by banjos, accordions, pianos and guitars all played by Cooper himself.
Apparently, from what I’ve read, this album’s sound is much different than anything Cooper has ever put out before. I am reminded of the Microphones, American Analog Set, Elliot Smith, Wooden Wand, and even Animal Collective at different points on this album.
Ghost will be released sometime in March, which is disappointing to me because it is the perfect winter album. Out of the 6 or 7 albums I have received for review this week, this is by far my favorite.
Look for Ghost in March.
