Recently written about and all around great band Echoes of Harper’s Ferry is playing at my favorite bar and yours, Now That’s Class. Show starts at 9(ish) and it’s a suggested donation of $5. There’s another band playing with a NSFW name, so you can check out who it is over at Echoes’ page.

Define ‘Happy’…

Are you at the New Kids on the Block concert at the Q tonight?

No?

Yeah me neither.

Don’t know how we missed this one a while back (actually we didn’t miss it at all we were just too lazy to post it) but the Scene or Free Times or whatever it’s called these days did a great write up on some happy hours worth checking out in Cleveland. They somehow missed $1.75 Great Lakes beers at everyone’s favorite bar Now That’s Class, but maybe that’s because they are pointing out great deals at places I otherwise couldn’t afford. Check out the article if you’re looking for a way to pretend you’re ritzy without spending too much money.
Tell them MyFriendCleveland sent ya’ and you’ll get absolutely nothing.

I SUCK AT EVENTS!!!

Rare- Land of Buried Treasure performance

Sunday October 22nd

Land of Buried Treasure
Performing the “Turkey Of The Sea” as told to Sir John Elliott

For 8 instruments
John Delzoppo Nate Schieble
Chris Smith Mark Mcguire
John Elliott Jae Kristoff
Mike Wilkinson Steve Hauschildt

To be followed by
John Wiese
John Wiese is an American noise and experimental music artist. He is extremely prolific, releasing many albums both as a solo artist and as a member of groups such as Bastard Noise, Sissy Spacek, and LHD, and he frequently collaborates with other musicians, including Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Brace Paine (The Gossip, Die Monitr Batss), Lasse Marhaug, and Merzbow. Wiese also runs the record label Helicopter, on which he releases his own work, often in extremely small print runs.

Wolf Eyes
Wolf Eyes are a noise band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.
Wolf Eyes began as a solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, with Aaron Dilloway joining in 1999, and John Olson in 2000. During this time, the band also briefly relocated to New York City and at one point enlisted Andrew Wilkes-Krier, now known to the public as Andrew W.K.. The group is rumored to have released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records and, most recently, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label. Connelly (also of Hair Police) replaced Dilloway on tour in early 2005, due to the latter’s departure for Nepal to make arrangements for his marriage, but Dilloway still records with the original members.
Most Wolf Eyes recordings are self-released, following the DIY tradition of bands such as Smegma. Their first major release was Dread, released on the American Tapes and Hanson Records labels but distributed through Bulb Records. Other major releases include Dead Hills on Troubleman and Burned Mind on Sub Pop. Most Wolf Eyes recordings are released as either lathes, cassettes, or cd-rs.
Wolf Eyes’ first two major tours were with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K.

A few things for a Saturday night.

Read THIS essay by Demetri. In this essay he lists 8 cover songs that are, in his opinion, far superior to their orignal. This could lead to some interactive fun! Comment with songs that you think are better than the originals! Argue with him! Send us more hate mail, we live for it.

Also, come support a show that features TWO firsts! Vietnam Werewolf’s first show and the first show put on (rather unsuccessfully) by My Friend Cleveland!

Also, check back for some photos from the afternoon show at SPACES. I should be putting them up later tonight or tomorrow.

We Swear Sweet New Stuff Is Coming Real Soon

Koran = Better Auto Sales

In Cincinnati a car dealership thought the best way to make a buck would be to declare a “jihad” on the U.S. auto market in a commercial. Surprisingly someone didn’t think this was cool and the ad was pulled. Kind of sucks, I was really looking forward to “Fatwa Fridays.”

A Little Less Struggling, A Little More Dough

Take note Cleveland artists, a free program entitled “Living as an Artist in Northeast Ohio: Making It Work,” is going down on October 4. Here is The Plain Dealer’s full disclosure of info and also the site where you can register. So stop being a lazy dirtbag who drinks too much and get to work!

Corralling College Grads

OSU takes 6,000 high school students from the Greater Cleveland area each year and now two former OSU students are working to get those people to come back after graduation with their “Come Home to Cleveland” project. They even have a website that shows what is “cool” in Cleveland. Obviously they don’t know about MFC. Oh, and by the way Regina, stop trying to take credit.

“I’m a big role-playing game nerd”

So I was about to jump down The Free Times throat for talking about Hawthorne Heights yet again (payola anyone?) but then I read that opening quote and I laughed/realized people on our message board probably hang out with these guys. Pot shot or shout out? You decide, nerds.

TONIGHT!!

There is a show at the Beachland. Check out the awesome flyer drawn by my favorite flyer artist, John G:

We’re All Hungry and Dumb For Friday

Plain Dealer Reporter Now On Drugs

It must have been a bad trip though. The only thing the guy got out of it was making Dave Matthews’ set seem longer. Painful.

Do You Know Why I Pulled You Over?

A new study in Cleveland found that black drivers are more likely to be stopped for traffic violations and to have their cars searched by police. City officials and white dudes have been quick to state the studies are inconclusive and do not prove that racial profiling is occuring, while NAACP President George Forbes stated, “”What this study says is that if you are poor and black or Puerto Rican, you are going to get stopped.” Check out both sides here.

You can ride a bicycle, or take the RTA ..1 from Public Square (picks up on the NW quadrant) down St. Clair Ave. Exit at Norwood and continue East for one block. Follow the music.

From the West: Take 90 East to the E. 55th St. exit and turn right onto E. 55th. Take a left on St. Clair. Take a left on E. 63rd (there’s a Charter One Bank on the corner). The Compound lot will be on your left.

MUSIC SAVES IS TWO!!!

In July of 2004, husband and wife team Kevin Neudecker and Melanie Hershberger opened MUSIC SAVES on Waterloo Road, next door to the Beachland Ballroom. In the two short years since then, MUSIC SAVES has established itself as one of the best sources for independent music in Ohio. MUSIC SAVES is a unique record store with an excellent selection of hard-to-find music, an inviting atmosphere, friendly staff, and an adorable cat named Vinyl.

Celebrate with them this weekend!

From the OC to Ohio, via very tall ships.

Pirates with lazers…

Ingenuity Fest starts today, July 13th. The four-day festival will feature music, food, art, and technology, all the while re-routing bus lines and and causing general anxiety for the 15 people that use public-transportation. Boot up your iPod and check out the Fest’s site here.

If that’s not your cup of tea, you can go the opposite way and check out the Tall ships exhibit, because who doesn’t like old boats?

Parker Posey, Paul Rudd, Cleveland… What’s not to like?

Well, possibly Mischa Barton. Aparently she was sick of filming on the gorgeous west coast and decided scenic Cleveland was more her style, co-starring in The Oh in Ohio. Posey and Rudd play a married couple that’s having a little trouble in the bedroom, and Barton plays a younger love interest mixing things up. Don’t fret, Posey has the option of the loveable, adorable, scorching-hot Danny DeVito. Paul Rudd, eat your heart out. Check out the trailer here.
